Matching avocado halves on two upper arms

Upper arm · Colour · Photo

Two arms are shown side by side, each with a colour tattoo of an avocado half, one showing the flesh with a pale centre and the other showing the pit. Both designs use a dark green outline with yellow-green and olive shading to suggest the fruit's skin and flesh. The tattoos are placed near the elbow on bare skin, with green foliage and a black t-shirt with yellow lettering in the background.

Dear Ruth,

The wholesale lorries came in at half two again, and I spent the first hour of my shift on the cold floor of Mill Street market knocking on avocados like a doctor checking chests. Most of them sound hollow, which means they're not ready, or they've gone past it. The crate from Murcia was a disgrace. Mr Okafor, who runs the stall next to mine, held one up under the strip light and said it looked like a bruised ankle, and I laughed so hard the forklift driver turned round.

Your tenner is in the tin under the till, not that you'll need it. I took the two good ones you pointed at last Thursday and cut them open on the back step, where the air smells of diesel and somebody's late chips. The first still had its stone, a fat brown thing that rattled when I shook it, and I thought of you saying you'd rather keep the stone than the flesh. The second was clean all through, pale and buttery, no pit at all, which is the sort of thing that makes you believe in luck.

I've put them side by side on the windowsill of the flat, facing the car park, so the sodium lights get into them. By four they'll both have gone the colour of old pennies at the rim. I know you think I'm soft, but I like that they match from outside, dark rind and all, and only the middle tells them apart.

Come round Saturday. I'll cut both open and you can pick which one is yours.

Love, Dan
