Diamond landscape with crystal peak on skin
Dotwork · Back · Mixed · Photo
A diamond-shaped tattoo shows a faceted, crystal-like mountain beneath a crescent moon, with the sky rendered in fine dotwork stippling. Below, wavy bands of teal, purple, yellow and green form a stylised river and hillside landscape, ending in wheat-like grasses at the base. Bold dark outlines and the mix of solid and stippled areas give the piece a graphic, illustrative look.

Dear Nell, the ferry put me off at Scarrow on Tuesday and the harbourmaster looked at my boots as though they had personally offended him. I have taken two rooms above the chandler's on the hill road. From the window I can see the whole of the island laid out like a map someone has begun to colour in: the grey stone of the ridge, the crystal face of Carn Ailley catching the last light, and the silver crescent of the moon that Mr Pascoe says rises early here, before the sun has even finished with the sea.

You will laugh, but I walked the river path yesterday with the theodolite on my shoulder and lost my way twice. The water splits three times above the bridge and comes back together in a fanned sheet of teal and violet, where the peat has stained it, and then the banks go yellow with the wheat the crofters still sow in the old strips. Father would have had a drawing for every bend. I only have the pencil I borrowed from the post office, and it keeps breaking. I have decided the map can wait. The island does not want to be measured; it wants to be looked at for a long while, and I am learning patience, which you will also laugh at.
I went up Carn Ailley at dusk, against Mrs Quayle's advice, and found the stars coming out in a dust so fine it seemed to have been pricked into the dark one point at a time. The mountain was not quite ice and not quite glass. I sat on a boulder until my hands were numb and then I did something I have not done since we were children at Hollin Bay: I counted nothing at all.
I will write again when the ferry comes back on Friday. Tell Mother I have eaten a proper meal and that the wheat is as tall as I am. Your loving sister, Mags.
