Two photographed black linework tattoos on a leg in a stained glass style, showing the Beast and Belle from Beauty and the Beast with the words Every Beauty Needs A Beast.

Beast and Belle stained glass leg tattoos

Geometric · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

Two side-by-side photographs show matching black outline tattoos on a lower leg. The left design shows the Beast's horned head above a rose inside a faceted glass-like panel, and the right design shows Belle within an oval, leaded-glass style frame with a rose and a gem at the base. Both use clean, even black linework with no shading and no colour, and the phrase Every Beauty Needs A Beast is written above or below each design.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The lead came is cold at this hour, and the rain has got in under the back door, so you work with gloves on and a torch clamped in your teeth. Someone put a brick through the Lantern Street pub window at half eleven, and the landlady rang you before the police had finished their tea. Now you sit on an upturned crate with the panel across your knees, picking out shards of amber glass that have caught the sodium lamps for a hundred years.

The panel is older than the pub. Someone leaded it in a hundred small diamonds: a crown of horns at the top, heavy-browed and sulking, and below it a bell jar of pale glass with a single rose pressed against it from the inside. The rose is the only thing whole. Every other facet is cracked, so you fit the new pieces around it, one cut at a time, forcing nothing.

Near three the rain stops and the streetlamps outside seem to hum louder. The landlady's grandson comes in with two mugs of tea and asks what the old picture is meant to be. You tell him it was a man cursed for being cruel, and a girl who looked past his face to the rose he kept. He frowns and says that doesn't sound like a fair trade. You say no, it was never fair, only patient, and you go back to the leading.

By dawn the joints are soldered and the new glass sits in its frame as if it has always been there. You hold the panel up to the window. The grey light comes through the horns first, then the rose, and for a moment the whole thing glows the colour of a held breath before the traffic on the main road starts and you carry it back inside to hang.
