Sphynx cat in a diamond frame on a thigh
Geometric · Thigh · Mixed · Photo
A sphynx cat head is drawn in sketchy black linework inside a large geometric diamond outline on the outer thigh. The wrinkled skin and ears are shaded with grey, and the eyes are filled in blue, which is the only colour in the design. The tattoo is centred on the thigh, with the subject's hands and dark clothing framing the image.

You learn the cat's name the way you learn everything at the fair, by being told it once by someone who expects you to keep up. Mrs Lusk runs the tent with the diamond sign, and her hairless grey tom Ptolemy sleeps on the cashbox because it is the only warm thing in the county that does not ask for money. You are nine and you have been given a job: keep the blue-eyed bulb lit above the mirror maze, and do not let anyone touch the cat.

The bulb goes out on the third night of rain. You climb the ladder with a pocketful of screws and a cold cup of tea, and in the mirrors you see the cat looking back from every side, wrinkled and unimpressed, its eyes two chips of sea glass. When you reach for the socket, Ptolemy is standing on the top rung, watching you as if you were the thing that had wandered in off the road. He does not blink. You understand, slowly, that he has been waiting for someone to come up and check on the light.
The bulb comes back on. Mrs Lusk pays you a penny in the morning and says the cat has taken a liking to you, which is a curse in her family. Years later you will still see those eyes whenever a window catches the evening sun and makes a diamond of it on the wall. You will not tell anyone the cat climbed down the ladder behind you, step by careful step, and that the fair packed up without him.
