Beautiful Disaster script with birds on a foot
Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey script tattoo reads Beautiful Disaster across the top of a bare foot, with a soft shaded smudge at the left and a trail of small birds in flight rising towards the toes. The lettering is crisp with fine outlines, while the smudge and birds use lighter shading that fades into the skin. The photograph is taken at a slight angle against a dark background, with the tattoo filling the centre of the frame.

Dev had the basket open before the sirens reached the bottom of Carrick House, and he was shouting at me to count the birds out. Eleven, twelve. The smoke was grey and lazy where it rolled off the bin store, and it climbed the face of the block past the balconies like something looking for a way in.

Mrs Abara on nine had painted her name on her wheelie bin in gold years ago, and the bin was hers, but the fire was not. She stood on the walkway in her dressing gown holding a cat carrier and would not go down. 'Beautiful disaster,' she kept saying, which was what her late husband used to call the flat every time the boiler packed in. Nobody had the heart to correct her.
The birds broke off the roof in a loose ribbon, climbing against the smoke, and for a minute I could not tell which dark marks were birds and which were ash. Dev said they would make for the loft on the north side, they always did. They had no sense of direction beyond the stairwell of this place. I believed him because I needed to.
Forty minutes later the crew had the bins out and the smoke had thinned to nothing over the car park. The birds came back one at a time and settled on the rail like punctuation. Mrs Abara counted them with her finger, then carried her cat inside. The last one landed beside me, grey as the smoke, and looked at me as if I was the one who needed rescuing.
