Black and grey · Flash
The image shows a stylised bee viewed from the front, with round eyes, short antennae and a striped, segmented abdomen. The wings are filled with decorative scroll and lattice patterns, creating a symmetrical, ornamental composition. It is drawn in solid black outlines and fills on a plain white background, with no shading or colour.

You are the last keeper on the terrace of Hollin Dome, where the air is rationed by the hour and the bees are the only things that still answer when you call. Your mother taught you to read their wings before their stripes: the lattice in the forewings tells you the nectar came from the fern vats, and the scrolls along the hind edge tell you the queen is laying. This morning the scrolls are crooked.

Down the spiral stair the sealed hatch hums. You draw the frame into the grey light and count. Three hundred and eleven bees, bright as brass pins, each with the ornamented wings the engineers stamped into the old stock before the Drought Accord. Nobody builds bees like that now. The lattice is a map of the valley outside, rivers drawn in cells, and you have never once seen a river.
Then a bee with a torn wing lands on your glove and does something the manual never mentioned. It walks a tight circle, climbs your wrist and turns to face north, toward the cracked seal where the sky leaks in. Its antennae tremble. You understand, slowly, that the wings were never decoration. They were directions, and the hive has been waiting generations for someone to read them.
You open the north vent. The air that comes in is cold and smells of wet stone, which you have only ever heard described. Behind you the hive rises in one unhurried note. You lift the torn-wing bee from your palm, tilt your face to the gap, and let it go.
