Bee tattoo on the top of a foot
Other · Black and grey · Photo
A small bee with outspread wings is tattooed on the top of a foot, centred within a white ornate frame held by a hand with red nail polish. The bee is drawn in dark ink with fine outlines and shading on the body and wings. The background is a sequined fabric in gold, purple and green tones, and the toes also have red nail polish.

Dear Nell,

The swarm came over the top of the allotment wall on Tuesday, just after the church clock struck eleven, and it hung off the damson like a dropped coat. Dad would have had it in a skep before you could say the word, but I stood at the gate with my good gloves on and felt like a girl again. Mr Ashworth from the end plot rang the number on his chalkboard and said he'd come after his tea, so we had an hour of the whole street stopping to look.
He came with a white sheet and a cardboard box and didn't say much. He just tapped the branch, once, twice, and the cluster dropped into the box like treacle. The queen was in the middle of it, long and slow, and the workers walked over her as if she were the only thing in the world worth minding. I think I held my breath the whole time.
Afterwards he sat on the bench with me and told me the bees don't swarm to be rid of anyone. They're leaving to make room, he said, and the old hive can still cope with a new queen. I asked him whether that meant the house would be quieter now. He laughed and said it would be busier, just in a different direction.
I've left the box in the shed with a jam jar of sugar water and the lid propped open. Come up on Sunday and bring the good secateurs. We'll see if the new hive takes.
Love, Jo
