The gatekeeper's wife had been counting the lamps for three nights when the palm came up out of the ironwork. Nobody saw it arrive. It was simply there at the foot of the railings on Coldharbour Street, a single tree the colour of ink on wet slate, and the bells of St Ardith rang eleven as though they had been waiting for it.

The old women said a palm that grows after dark belongs to whoever touches it first, and must be carried home before the lamps go out. So Tobias Quill, who lit the gas along the river wall, took his ladder and his tinderbox and went down the hill with his sleeve rolled up. The trunk was curved like a question. When he pressed his wrist against the cold bars, the fronds unfolded across his skin and stayed there, blue and fine, and the iron behind him went on being black.

He walked the city that night with the tree on his arm. Every door he passed stood a little wider, and every cat on every wall turned to watch him go. He lit the lamps as he always had, but the flames bent towards his wrist as if they wanted a closer look at the thing.

In the morning the gatekeeper's wife found one more leaf on the railings, and Tobias was asleep on the river wall with his hand open to the sky. The bells rang eleven again, and nobody in Coldharbour Street thought to ask who had planted the palm, because by then everyone had a little of it to carry.
