Beetlejuice and Lydia cartoon tattoo in a scroll frame
Traditional · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A cartoon-style tattoo shows a figure with blonde hair and a striped black and white suit beside a dark-haired figure in a red dress with a spiderweb pattern, with a skull at the top. Bold black outlines define the figures, and the scrollwork frame around them is shaded in grey. Red, yellow, purple and green ink dominate the figures, while the frame and skull are black and grey against pale skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
It had rained on the Thursday market for three days, and the stalls along Tanner's Yard sagged under their tarpaulins like wet cows. Old Marjory had sold hairpins and cracked buttons from the same trestle since before the canal was dug, and she swore the striped man came every year the rain came. He stood at the end by the eel-seller, hands folded over his umbrella handle, and he never once got wet.

The girl came in the afternoon with a spiderweb shawl over her red dress and a brass lamp in her hand, shining it along the cobbles as if she had dropped something there. She asked the eel-seller the price of a skull. He said it was not for sale. She said everything was for sale on a wet Thursday if you asked the right person, and she pointed her lamp at the striped man.
The trade was simple, as trades in that yard always were. He would give her the rain that never reached the gutters, if she carried his umbrella up Hangman's Steps and did not once look behind her. She looked behind her on the twelfth step. The umbrella vanished, the rain stopped mid-fall, and the market below stood dry and silent, every haggler frozen with a coin in the air.
Marjory said the girl came back down alone, wiping her lamp on her sleeve, and bought one hairpin for a penny. The rain began again that evening, very gently, and the umbrella was found leaning against the eel-seller's barrel with its handle polished bright, as though someone had been holding it all afternoon.
