Infinity symbol with you and me

Lettering · Black and grey · Flash

A single continuous line forms an infinity symbol, with the word you written in the left loop and me in the right loop in a cursive script. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the design is drawn in black ink on pale paper. The composition is centred and fills most of the frame, with the paper's edge visible at the top left.

The rope-walk at Pennick Harbour ran the length of the quay, and the old ropemaker there would never cut a cord from its hank. Her name was Agnes Tull, and she said a line that stopped was a line that drowned somebody.

Two boys grew up watching her from the bollards. One was Joe Marl, who hauled nets, and the other was Edwin Carrick, who could tie a bowline blindfold and did, once, to win a bet off the fish-market men. They fell out over a girl who sold crab from a barrow, then fell back in over a storm that took the lifeboat's second mooring.

When Edwin's boat failed to come home one February, Joe walked the breakwater until the tide turned. On the rocks he found a length of tarred cord, knotted so that its two loops crossed in the middle. Agnes had spun it for them as children, she told him when he brought it to her shed. Her grandmother called it the sailor's figure, a knot with no ends, and said you tied it to a man's wrist before he went out so the sea would have to bring the one back to the other.

Joe carried the cord to the far side of the bay, where the water lay black and still, and dropped it over the rail. He went home that night expecting nothing. In the morning he found Edwin asleep on the bench in the net loft, salt in his hair, with a loop of tarred cord still knotted round his wrist, and Agnes at the wheel outside, spinning a new length from her hank without once stopping.
