Believe script with heart on foot
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A black script tattoo reading "believe..." with a small solid heart above the i runs diagonally across the top of a bare foot. The linework is thin and even, with the ellipsis dots trailing off to the right. The ink is black on pale skin against a dark brown floor, and the photograph is taken at a slight angle from above.

Morag had painted signs along the harbour front for thirty-one years, and she could letter a name backwards in her sleep. The job that Tuesday was the board for the new ice cream kiosk at the end of the breakwater. The owner, a young man called Dennis with a streaming cold and a worse haircut, wanted one word across the top in her old copperplate. She agreed without telling him she had already painted that same word twice that spring, once on a fishing smack and once on a shed door whose owner never came back for the key.

She mixed the black with a drop of linseed and worked from the left, the brush loaded and light. Gulls argued over a dropped bag of chips while she drew the stems. The i in the middle wanted something above it, and Dennis asked for a red heart, so she told him red would bleed in the salt and gave him black instead, a small solid lump like a sloe. When she reached the end she stopped, because he had asked for three dots after the word. She had always thought a word with dots after it was an admission that the speaker had not finished.
Dennis paid her in coins and gave her a flapjack wrapped in a napkin. He asked whether she thought the paint would last. She looked at the wet letters going glossy in the sun and said the sign would outlive the kiosk and very likely the breakwater.
She walked home along the wall with her tins clanking in the bag. At the top of her stairs she pulled down the old shoebox where she kept the shop-front drafts she had never used, found the sheet with the word written out a dozen times in pencil, and under the last one, in her own hand, she added the three dots and did not cross them out.
