Script quote tattoo on a forearm

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A black and white photograph of a three-line script quote, reading Sometimes Quiet is Violent, on the inner forearm near the wrist. The letters have smooth, even linework in a flowing brush-script style, with solid black ink and no shading. The sleeve of a dark top covers the upper arm, and the plain light background keeps the focus on the lettering.

Dear Tom, the foghorn stopped on Tuesday, and I have not slept properly since. Mam says it's the quiet keeping her up, though she won't say what she means by it. She sits at the table with the wireless off and her hands flat on the oilcloth, the way Dad used to sit before he went out past the point.

Mrs Penhallow from next door came round with a pie and said nothing at all. She set it down, looked at the kettle until I filled it, and left. It was the loudest thing anyone has done in this street since the storm. I keep thinking of what you said on the harbour wall, that a man who shouts has at least told you where he's standing.

I went up to the chapel this morning and sat under the boards where the names are painted. Nobody spoke. I counted nine names and then stopped, because the tide was coming in and I could hear it lapping the bottom steps. The quiet had a shape to it, like a hand held over a mouth, and I understood for the first time that Mam had been holding it there for weeks so none of us would have to say his name.

So I am writing instead of saying anything at the table. Come home on the spring tide if the boat holds. Bring the good tea. Sign the bottom in your own hand so Mam can see it is you and not another telegram. Your loving sister, Nell.
