Believe script on the top of a foot

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A black script tattoo reading believe followed by three dots runs diagonally across the top of a bare foot, with a small solid heart sitting above the letter i. The linework is thin and even with a smooth, handwritten flow. The ink is solid black on pale skin, and the photo is taken at an angle showing the toes and the ankle on a dark floor.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The ferry board outside the harbour office on Little Tarrow had been chalked the same way for forty years: destination, sailing hour, and then a row of dots where the weather was supposed to go. Ruth Lusk had taken over the chalk in October, when her uncle's hands began to shake too badly to hold it steady. She kept the dots. She had never understood them until the winter, when the mainland boat stopped running for nine days and the dots were all anybody talked about.

"Why do you never finish?" asked Ailsa Penrose, who was eight and came down each morning to count gulls on the slipway. She had a chalk-smudged nose and a library book tucked under one arm.

"The sea doesn't finish its sentences either," Ruth said, wiping the board with the side of her hand. "You wait and see what it says next."

Ailsa considered this with her whole face. Then she took the stub of blue chalk from the tray, climbed onto the bench, and reached up to the bottom corner where Ruth had written, that morning, the one word she had been too superstitious to chalk all winter: Believe. She drew a small heart above the i, pressing hard, the way children do when they want a thing to stay.

The Kittiwake came round the point at four with Ruth's uncle aboard, pale and grinning, finally allowed home from the mainland hospital. Ruth read the board from the quay and saw the heart first. She left the dots where they were and wrote nothing after them at all.
