Quote and pink running shoe on a foot
Lettering · Ankle · Mixed · Photo
A bare foot rests on a carpet, with a line of black script running from the ankle towards the heel. Near the heel sits a pink running shoe with grey shading and the figures 26.2 written beside it. Black lettering and pink colour ink both appear, with the photo taken casually in dim indoor light.

The snow came down on Hollin Fold the week the old road closed, and Mary Tallis went to the bottom drawer for the shoes nobody had asked her to wear. They were pink, bought off a carrier's van at Kendal fair the summer before, and the soles had never touched a wet stone. Her brother Joe lay in the back bedroom with a fever the doctor would not climb up to see. The nearest doctor was at Sedbergh, twenty-six miles of fell and frozen beck away, and the snow had buried the cart track.

Her mother said nobody walked that far in February. Mary said nobody had tried to run it either, and pulled the laces tight. She wrote the message on the back of a seed packet and pinned it inside her coat. Before she went out she stood in the scullery and said the thing her father used to say when the ewes would not lamb: she believed she could, so she would. Her mother laughed at her, then stopped laughing and held the door.
The wind took the first mile and gave nothing back. She counted the walls. At twenty miles the ice cracked under her at the beck, the pink went grey with slush, and she thought of turning. Then she heard a dog barking far off on the high pasture, the sound of someone's farm still awake, and she kept going, counting the walls, one, two, on to twenty-six.
The doctor came back over the tops in the morning on a borrowed pony, swearing at the cold. He found the seed packet damp in her hand and read the scrawl by the lamp. Joe lived. Mary slept three days, and when she woke the shoes were drying by the range, and her mother had chalked the number on the lintel so the whole dale would know how far it was.
