Dear Nell, the rain here has been relentless since Tuesday, the sort that bounces off the awnings of the Kallithea market stalls and runs in brown rivers between the crates of oranges. I bought you a tin of the honey you liked, the dark kind from the old man with one eye who sells it by the spoonful. He wrapped it in a page of yesterday's newspaper and insisted on tying the string twice, so it should survive the post, though I am not promising anything.

I keep thinking about the afternoon at the harbour when you laughed so hard at my bad Greek that the fishmonger came out to see what the fuss was about. You wrote your name in the condensation on the window of the café, and then you drew a heart around it with a curl at the top, the way you used to draw everything when we were girls, looping the letters until they nearly fell out of their shape. I told you it looked like a bent spoon. You said that was the best compliment anyone had ever paid you.

So I am sending this from the market, under the umbrella with the broken spoke, and I am going to go and find a pen that works, because I want to write something on the back of this envelope before the rain takes it. Keep the honey somewhere warm. Keep the spoon, too, the real one from the ferry, that I left in your bag last summer. I am coming home at Easter and I expect you to have the kettle on and that same crooked grin ready for me at the door.
