Below her the causeway was empty except for the tide creeping over the stones. She wound the clockwork by hand, counting turns the way he had taught her, and when the great lens began to revolve the beam swept out across the water and came back across the whitewashed wall. There it threw the shape of a wolf's head, ears up, mane bristling in black sawtooth shapes against the lime.

She watched it slide along the wall, fade, and return, a shadow that would not quite leave the stone. Far down the rock something barked once, then thought better of it. Marion picked up the pen and wrote beneath his line: Light lit. Wolf present. Kept the watch.
