Best Friends wrist lettering on a beach

Lettering · Forearm · Colour · Photo

Two hands are linked by their little fingers in front of a turquoise sea and pale sand. The wrists carry dark blue handwritten-style script reading Best with a heart on the left and Friends with a heart on the right. The ink is solid and even, with a soft, slightly faded warm tone to the overall photograph.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Down at Hollin Cove the old women said the tide kept its promises better than the chapel did. Every August, at the lowest water of the year, Maud Pennick and Ilse Carrow hooked their little fingers together on the wet sand and swore that whatever the sea took, it would give back the other. They were eleven. Nobody thought much of it until the summer the sea took Ilse's brother off the Mabel Rose and kept him.

Maud took it hardest of anyone. She bought a pot of blue ink from the chemist in Sallow Bay and wrote their words on the insides of their wrists, Best on Ilse's and Friends on her own, with a small heart pricked in beside each one so the ink would hold. The ink was thick and stubborn. Brine could not shift it. Ilse married a miller and moved inland to Thorne, and the words faded to a grey that showed only in the low evening light, but they never went away.

Maud stayed. She mended nets, then ran the tea hut, then grew too stiff for either. Each August she walked down to the low-water mark alone. Holidaymakers with painted toes asked what the old woman was doing there, and she told them she was keeping an appointment, which was true.

The last August, the tide went out further than anyone living had seen. Maud stood where she always stood and held out her little finger to nothing. Far up the flats a figure in a grey coat was walking towards her, slowly, one hand raised. They met at the water's edge and neither spoke. They only hooked their fingers together, and the sea, having nothing left to take, went quietly back out.
