Oona had been mending the same net since Tuesday, and Dessa kept coming down the quay with tea in a dented flask to tell her it would never be finished. The net belonged to the Marjorie Lyle, a crab boat with a cracked wheelhouse, and its mesh had more holes than rope.

Her grandmother had once wound a length of red wool round the two of them when they were small, knotted it snug, and said a red thread could not be cut by the sea. Dessa had kept hers. Oona had lost hers in the tide off the breakwater the summer she left for Aberdeen, and came back with a ticket and nothing to say.

They sat on the bollard while the gulls argued over a split bread roll. Dessa pulled a biro from her coat and drew on the back of Oona's hand a loop that crossed over itself, then a small solid heart beside it. "Lemniscate," Oona said. "Gran called it a sideways eight." "Gran called everything something." They laughed, and the net slid off the wall into the green water and sank out of sight.

Oona tied the red thread back on with a fisherman's knot, pulling it until it bit. Out past the breakwater the Marjorie Lyle sounded her horn, once, the way she always had, and the two of them stood up together to go and help haul her in.
