The sign over the big top has lost its B to the wind, so for a fortnight the tent has advertised "ewitched" to the Lincolnshire fields, and you have stopped apologising for it. Madame Vesna sits on the steps of the wagon with a flask of cold tea and tells you the audience can finish the word themselves. They always could. That was the trick.

The act is simple now. She stands in the sawdust with her silver wand, the one she bought from a pawnbroker in Hull, and you wait in the wings with a tin of glitter and a tea towel. Forty years ago the crowds came for the levitation. Now they come for the cheap benches and the pie tent. Tonight there are eleven people in the rows, a man asleep with his cap over his face, and two girls who keep filming the wrong end of the ring.

Halfway through, the wand dies. Vesna taps it against her palm and it gives nothing, and the silence stretches long enough that you can hear the generator coughing behind the lorries. So you do the only thing you were ever any good at. You step out with the tin, throw a fistful of glitter at the lamp, and it breaks across the dark like a dropped handful of stars. The sleeping man sits up. Vesna looks at you with the face of someone watching a thing she loves come back from the dead.

Afterwards she takes a brush from her coat and paints the missing letter back onto the board by the gate, wet black on white, a long looping B that hangs over the field as though it always belonged there. "Bewitched," she says, and nobody argues.
