Beyond script inside an infinity symbol on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a small black tattoo on the inner wrist, showing the word beyond in cursive script set inside an infinity symbol. The linework is thin and even, with solid black ink and no shading, and the skin tone is natural against a pale fabric background. The composition is centred on the wrist, with a hand and red painted nails visible at the top of the frame.

The last train into Fennick Junction was never on time, and you had long stopped minding. Gerald, the signalman, would ring through at ten past eleven to say it had cleared the moor curve, and you'd put the kettle on for a cup you never finished, then wait for the lamps to come round the bend.

Tonight the rain came sideways off the moors and wrenched the enamel sign loose from its nail. You climbed the step ladder in your oilskin and found, under the flaking paint that said Platform 2, a second board nobody had ever mentioned to you. It was an old destination plate, one place written on it in a looping hand: Beyond. Below it, in Gerald's square capitals, a pencilled note: NOT ON THE TIMETABLE. DO NOT SELL.
You laughed at that, alone under the canopy. Then you thought of the lost property ledger, the umbrellas and wedding rings and the one glove that turned up every spring, and how nobody ever came back asking for the thing they had really lost. The timetable had a loop in it too, a line that ran out from the junction, curved back through the cutting and met itself again at the same signal box, as if the company had never quite decided where the journey ended.
The last train came in with its doors open and nobody on board. You stood at the edge of the platform while the wind folded the rain back on itself, and you read the sign once more. Then you picked up the lantern, locked the ticket office, and walked out to the end of the platform, where the rails simply kept going into the dark.
