Infinity symbol with feather and family script
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small black tattoo on the inner wrist shows an infinity symbol, with the word family written in cursive script through its left loop. A feather sits above the lettering and extends along the top of the infinity loop. The linework is thin and even, with solid black ink and no shading, set against warm skin tones and a wooden surface in the background.

The wind had backed round to the west on the ninth day, and Mairi Gow stood on the slip at Hallan with her shawl pulled tight, counting boats. There were four. There should have been five. The fifth belonged to her brother Eòin, and he had gone out past the Skerry Rocks with two lines and a promise to be home before the tide turned.

The old women said the sea kept what it wanted and gave back what it did not. Mairi did not believe that, but she sat up with the kettle anyway. Near dawn a grey gull came down on the wall beside her, dropped a long feather at her feet, and walked off along the harbour as if it had business elsewhere. She picked the feather up. It was soft and barred, the colour of wet slate, and it had been pulled clean from a wing.
She took it to the house and laid it on the table beside the bread. Her mother saw it and said nothing, only went to the drawer and brought out the twine they used for mending creels. Together they wound the cord into a loop, then crossed it and pulled it tight until the shape lay figure-eight on the wood, the feather rising from the crossing like a sail. Mairi wrote the one word she trusted on the back of a tally card and tied it through the middle: family.
At noon the fifth boat came round the point, low in the water and slow, with Eòin at the tiller and a second man lying in the bottom, cold and cursing and alive. Mairi did not run down the slip. She waited, as her mother had waited, and when he climbed up she held out the cord. He looked at the feather, then at the word, and laughed until he coughed. The gull, she thought, had only been early.
