You are halfway up the broken stair when Nell calls you a coward, which is unfair, because the drop beside you is forty feet of nettles and the steps have been crumbling since before Grandad was born. Nell goes first, of course. She always goes first, one palm flat on the stone and the other hand stretched back over her shoulder, fingers spread, waiting for yours. You take it. You always take it.

The castle belongs to nobody now. A council sign at the gate says KEEP OUT in letters somebody has tried to scrub away, and the keep is open to the sky, its floors gone to rooks and rainwater. The two of you have been coming here since the summer you could both fit through the gap in the north wall. Nell knows every loose stone. You know which windows let the wind in sideways and which let in the smell of the harbour chips.

At the top, the window slit is wide enough for two heads. Nell leans out to shout at the gulls, and you watch her hand slip on the sill, the way it has been slipping all year, since the hospital and the long visiting hours. You grab her wrist before she has time to be embarrassed about it. For a second neither of you says anything, and the wind pushes at your backs like an impatient landlord.

Then Nell hooks her little finger through yours and tugs, the old trick from playground races. "Still the bossy one," she says. "Still the lil one," you tell her. The sea below is grey as an old photograph, and for once it is you who is holding on.
