Big sis and lil sis finger lettering

Lettering · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

Two fingers, each with a single line of black script lettering, show the words big sis on the upper finger and lil sis on the lower one. The linework is thin and even, with the ink shaded in soft greys against a dark background. The black and white photograph is close and centred on the fingers, with the words running along each finger's length.

Snow had sealed the pass by four o'clock, and the landlady of the Hollin Cross put two candles on the table and told them the kitchen fire was theirs until morning. Nell Ashby had not spoken since the car slid off the bend. Her younger sister, Bet, was counting the coins left in her purse for the third time, as if they might have multiplied while nobody watched.

Their mother had always said the elder one should go first into cold water. Nell had gone first into everything: the school gate, the hospital corridor, the funeral with the wrong hymns. Bet had followed, grumbling that she could manage perfectly well on her own. Outside the window the lane had vanished under white, and a single lamp swung over the empty yard like a slow pendulum.

Bet pulled a stub of pencil from her coat and began writing on the back of the inn's bill in slanting copperplate, the way Nell had once taught her to label library books. She pushed the paper across the table. "Big sis," she said, flatly, as if reading a shipping label. Nell read it and laughed, a short wet sound that surprised them both. "You never once let me be the little one."

Nell took the pencil and wrote two words beneath, then turned the bill so the ink faced the fire. The paper curled slightly in the heat. Neither of them mentioned the funeral again. Outside, the snow kept falling and filled every track they had come by, and neither of them looked at the window again.
