Bird and birdcage on fingers
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two small tattoos sit on adjacent fingers, both wrapped in clear plastic film. On the left finger is a simple flying bird, and on the middle finger is an open birdcage with a heart in its centre. The linework is fine and the ink is in black and grey tones, with the photo framed close on the hand against a plain background.

Mr Abara on the fourteenth floor kept a goldfinch in a brass cage he'd bought off a man at Lewisham market, and every morning at seven I heard him whistling back at it through his open kitchen window. The little front door had a heart cut into the tin, and he told me his late wife had scratched it with a nail file one wet Sunday, because she said a door ought to say what it was for.

That winter the council letters came through the letterboxes in brown envelopes that nobody opened for a week. Mr Abara opened his on the walkway, read it twice, and folded it into his cardigan pocket without a word. The next morning I watched him carry the cage out onto the balcony, hang it from the railing hook, and work the little door open with his thumb. He'd oiled the hinge so it wouldn't squeak. The bird sat on the rim for a long time, turning its head at the car park, the sycamore, the grey blur of the estate beyond it.
Then it went. It cleared the railing, dropped past the bins and rose over the roofs of the low houses on Vale Road, and Mr Abara stood with his hands on the rail and didn't call after it. I thought that was the end of the story, and I think he did too.
But the cage stayed on its hook all through the removal men and the boarded-up stairwells. Each evening, when the light went orange over the flats, the goldfinch came back, perched on the heart, and sang until the streetlamps buzzed on. Mr Abara never shut the door. He said it was the first thing his wife ever asked him to keep open, and he wasn't about to start arguing with her now.
