Two outlined hearts on a finger

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

Two small outlined hearts sit either side of a short equals sign, all in thin black linework on the side of a finger. The lines are even and the shapes are left unshaded, so the tattoo reads as a simple, delicate outline. The hand rests on a white knitted fabric with red nail polish visible, and the tattoo is the clear focal point.

The lift in Calder House stopped at every second floor, so the people who lived there learned to talk through the gaps in the stairwell. Ada lived on four and Tomasz lived on five, and for three winters they shouted good mornings down the concrete well before either had seen the other's face.

In the spring the council sent a painter with a tin of grey. He painted the stairwell walls on a Monday, and by teatime the old chalk had come through the paint like bruises. Ada took a stub of red chalk from her coat pocket and drew a heart on the rail of the landing. The next morning there was a heart on the rail of five, the same size, leaning a little, as if the hand that drew it had been cold.

They kept at it all summer. Ada drew a heart, Tomasz answered with one, and when the painter came back they moved to pencil, then biro, then the backs of bus tickets pushed through the bars. The caretaker, Mr Fenwick, found a heart folded into his tea caddy and asked who had been so careless with a lover. Nobody told him. Tomasz wrote a single mark between two of his hearts one afternoon, a short line, and Ada said later it was the only sum she had ever trusted: two hearts, equal, nothing owed on either side.

When the lift was finally mended in October, they met at the ground floor doors and found they had nothing to say that the stairwell had not already said. They climbed back up together, one flight at a time, and the lift stayed empty behind them.
