Bird and small floral tattoos on feet

Other · Black and grey · Photo

Two bare feet wearing brown suede loafers stand on a stone floor, with dark trousers visible at the top of the frame. The tattoo on the left foot is a small, thin line drawing of a flower or stem-like motif, while the tattoo on the right foot is a larger bird with outstretched wings in black and grey shading. The composition is a close overhead view centred on the tops of both feet.

In the village of Thornby the wedding of Ada Pellow and Wat the cooper's son was set for Michaelmas, but Ada's grandmother said the marriage would not hold unless the old hawk on the marsh post was given a stem of the blue flag iris first. Nobody had ever seen the hawk leave its post, and nobody in Thornby could say why it should want flowers.

Wat went out at first light with his boots full of dew and a knife in his belt. The reeds were grey and the water was still. He found the hawk exactly where the grandmother had said, its wings half open to the wind as though it had been waiting for someone to ask it a question. He cut a single iris stem and held it up. The hawk looked at the flower for a long while, then looked at him, and said in a voice like a rusted gate that the marriage would hold if he kept his word and never once asked Ada where she had been on the night of the frost.

Wat promised, though he did not yet know what he was promising. The hawk took the stem in its talons and rose over the church tower, shaking drops from its feathers onto the lych gate. On the morning of the wedding the bells rang, the vicar read the vows, and a grey feather drifted down through the open door and settled on the altar cloth beside the bride's glove.

Ada picked it up and turned it over in her fingers. Wat saw her glance at the marsh through the window, and he kept his promise, and for fifty years in Thornby no one asked where she had been on the night of the frost.
