Small diamond tattoo on an ankle
Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A small, simple diamond outline is tattooed on the side of a person's ankle, with the lower leg in dark denim above it. The linework is solid black with no visible shading, and the design is shown as a single flat shape. The photograph is taken outdoors on a stone surface, with the strappy brown sandal and a blurred background of greenery and rock.

The rockery at the back of Mrs Okonedo's house had swallowed a lot of things over the years, and I had been paid by the hour to dig out the bindweed that grew through it. On the third Tuesday I turned up a piece of cut glass the size of a fingernail, faceted on one side and clouded on the other. She came down the path in her slippers to look at it, and held it up against the sky the way you would check a boiled egg for cracks.

"Our Derek lost his ring in there in 1979," she said. "Said it was worth more than the house. It wasn't. It was a chip from a Christmas cracker that he'd got sweet on."
I asked whether she wanted it back in the earth or on the windowsill. She said the windowsill, so I wiped the soil off with my thumb and set it beside the kettle, where it caught the light and threw small wobbling shapes across the tiles.
Every afternoon after that I found her standing there, squinting at it. She told me about the summer they kept a jar of pennies and a rope swing that snapped, and about how Derek had drawn a diamond on the back of his hand in biro so the girls at the bus stop would think he was rich. I thought of that simple black outline and wondered how many people carry a shape like that around for a joke that turned out to be true.
On my last day she pressed the glass into my palm. "Keep it," she said. "You dig the dirt, you keep the shine." I put it in my overalls pocket, where it knocked against my keys all the way home, and I have never once been sure whether it was worth more than the house.
