The big top came down on Tuesday in a sideways rain, and Mr Aldous has sold the last two ponies to a dairy farm outside Carlisle. Nell cried into the feed bucket. I have been counting the seats in my head all week, four hundred and six of them, and none of the sums come out right. Mostly I am writing because Mrs Pickering came back.

She went missing the night before our final show, and we had the whole company out with lanterns, calling her name along the canal towpath until Dad said the cat had more sense than the lot of us and was probably asleep in a dry hat somewhere. I found her at dawn under the ticket wagon, sitting perfectly upright with her head turned to one side, her tail curled out behind her in a long question mark. She looked at me as if I was the one who had been missing. Then she walked straight across the sawdust and sat down in the middle of the empty ring.

We are taking her with us to Leeds on the last wagon, in the basket where the lion used to sleep. Dad says a cat is a poor kind of circus animal, since nobody can make her do anything, but I think that is exactly why she has stayed. Write when you can.
