Matching black ink figure tattoos on both feet
Other · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows two feet in mismatched flat shoes, one black and one brown, on a speckled floor with dark trousers. Each foot carries a similar dark tattoo of an animal-like figure with a curved tail or fin shape, drawn in solid black ink with some fine detail. The image is in black and grey tones with a slightly grainy finish, and the feet fill most of the frame.

Dear Nell,

I have your brown shoe and you have my black one, and I have decided not to be cross about it any more. The customs man at Dover studied our two pairs of flats for so long that I thought he might arrest us for mismatching. Mum would have laughed. She always said the sea takes one of everything, and we were only giving it a head start.
The crossing was rough. Halfway over, a dolphin came up alongside the ferry, rolling its grey back under the rail, and the whole deck lurched to one side to watch. You elbowed me to see better and I lost my grip on the flask. Grandad would have said that was the boat's fault and not ours. He was the one who drew those dolphins for us on the kitchen table in biro, the summer before the harbour wall fell in, and told us they always swam towards home.
We had them done in Folkestone, in the little room above the chip shop, the week after the funeral. The man with the bad elbow said the lines would soften with age and we should not worry if they blurred. I have not worried. Every morning I look down and see the same curl of tail, the same narrow beak pointed left, and I think of the boat going out and the tide coming back.
So keep the brown shoe. Wear it to the market on Thursdays and let people wonder. When you come over in spring we will walk the wall together and see whether the dolphins still come in close. Whatever shoes we are wearing, they will be pointing the same way.
Love, Maggie
