Fine line black outline of a small cat tattooed on an ankle, with the foot in a leopard print flat on a pink rug.

Small cat outline on an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A small black line drawing of a cat in outline sits on the side of one ankle. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the design is shown against bare skin. The background is a pink textured rug and the foot is wearing a leopard print flat, so the tattoo is the only black ink in the frame.

The rain had been coming down over the Thursday market since before dawn, and Mrs Oduya's stall stood at the far end where the awning sagged like a wet sail. She sold thread, buttons and lace, and a little tin of cat's-eye beads that nobody ever bought. A grey cat with one torn ear came under the tarpaulin each morning and sat on the crate of mismatched spools as if it had paid rent.

One Thursday a boy came running through the puddles with a shoebox held over his head. Inside was a kitten no bigger than a teacup, soaked through and furious. He had found it under the fish stalls, he said, and the fishmonger wanted it in the bin. Mrs Oduya took the box, looked at the kitten, and said nothing for the length of a whole cough. Then she tipped the beads out of their tin and gave the boy a shilling to fetch a saucer of milk from the dairy.

The grey cat watched all of this from the spools. When the kitten had drunk its fill and gone to sleep in a nest of old cardigans, the grey cat stepped down, walked once around the crate, and lay across the box with its back to the rain. It did not leave until the market packed up at dusk.

When the lamps went out the next week, the boy came back to find the stall shut and a pale outline of a cat chalked on the wet pavement beneath it, its tail curled to meet its ear. Nobody ever said who drew it. The rain washed it away by morning, but the kitten grew up on the crate and was never once put in the bin.
