Black script lettering reading If you're a bird, I'm a bird, with small flying bird silhouettes, tattooed on the back of a neck.

Bird quote script on the back of the neck

Lettering · Neck · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows the words "If you're a bird, I'm a bird." in flowing cursive script across two lines, with three small bird silhouettes flying up and to the left. The lettering is done in fine, even black linework with little shading, and the birds are solid black fills. The image is a close crop of the back of a neck against a blurred background, with the tattoo centred in the frame.

The snow came over the Bwlch a week early, and I was the only fool daft enough to take the high road with the Pryce family's letters buttoned inside my coat. My satchel had got too wet to trust, so the envelopes rode against my ribs, warm and crackling, while the wind tried to pick me off the path like a bad apple.

Halfway up, where the drystone wall gives out, I found a boy of about twelve perched on a fence post with his collar up to his ears. His name was Idris. He had been sent to bring the ewes down and had lost the ewes, then the path. He said his gran always told him that when the weather turned you should go where the birds go. I asked him where the birds went. "Down," he said, very sure, and pointed at nothing at all.

We went down together, him ahead and me behind with my hand on his hood so he wouldn't go over the lip. Somewhere under the cloud a flock of small dark birds lifted off the heather in one shrug and banked away over the drop, and Idris laughed out loud. "If you're a bird," he shouted, "I'm a bird," and he ran straight at the sound of their wings, so I had to run too or lose him.

At the gate of the Pryce farm the kitchen light was on. I handed over the letters, and the one from Ceri's son in Valparaiso was still dry, which I still count as the best thing I did that winter. Behind me the birds came back over the wall and settled on the gatepost, black and neat as full stops, and I stood there a long while before I went home.
