Bird silhouette with forest scene on forearm

Realism · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A large bird, shaped like a crow or raven, fills the forearm. Inside its outline, a misty forest of tall trees fades into pale green and yellow, with a small dark figure standing on a path. The bird's legs and belly are shaded in browns and rust-orange, and the soft blending gives the piece a realistic, layered look against the plain skin and pavement behind it.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Margaret had counted the ewes twice before the raven came down on the gatepost, black as a wet boot, and looked at her as if she owed it money. She was seventy-one and had buried a husband, two dogs and a brother in the same frozen ground, and she did not intend to be frightened of a bird.

"Go on, then," she told it. "There's nothing here for you."

The raven tilted its head and said nothing. Beyond it the far field lay under a grey sky that had been threatening snow since Tuesday, and the hedgerow had gone the colour of rust. She had seen the bird on that same post every morning that week, always facing the lane, and she had begun to suspect it was waiting for someone to walk down it.

On Thursday her grandson's van came up the track with the wrong tyres on it, and he climbed out with a face she didn't like. He had walked the old forest path from the Hollow road, he said, because the lane was flooded. Halfway along, under the beeches, he had seen a man standing very still between the trunks, watching him, and when he blinked the man was gone.

Margaret looked past him at the gatepost. The raven had gone. In its place, on the wet wood, lay a single grey feather, and she knew without going to look that the path it pointed down was the one that ran to the church, where her husband had lain in the cold for three days before anyone came to fetch him.
