Black ink tattoo design of birds, a dandelion and the script words "if you're a bird, then I'm a bird" on a golden painted background.

Birds, dandelion and script quote design

Lettering · Black and grey · Flash

A black ink design shows a dandelion seed head with small birds and loose seeds drifting up and to the left, beside flowing script that reads "if you're a bird, then I'm a bird". The linework is clean and uniform with no shading, set against a warm yellow and orange painted background with soft brushstrokes. The text runs across the centre-right of the frame and the botanical element anchors the lower left.

Dear Marguerite, the dandelion clock on the back wall of the allotment finally let go this morning, all of it at once, while I was stood there with the kettle going cold in my hand. Seeds went up over the runner beans like someone had shaken out a wet sheet, and I thought of your nonsense about birds. You said it on the bench by the water butt last August, when the wasps were drunk on the windfalls, and I said that was the daftest thing I had ever heard. You said it again anyway.

I have been carrying your sentence about in my coat pocket since the funeral, folded small, the way you used to fold the seed packets so the earth stayed out of the creases. Mrs Hartley from number nine asked me whether I was sleeping. I said I was sleeping like a bird, which made her laugh, and I have decided that counts as progress.

I went down the lane this afternoon with the wheelbarrow and a pair of secateurs, and the wind was coming from the south-west, the way you liked it for flying a kite. Three sparrows were squabbling over a fallen sunflower head by the gate. Two more lifted off the fence when I came close, and I swear they went straight up the way you said they would, to see whether the world had turned over without them.

So I am writing to say that the seeds have gone, and I am still here, and I am a bird, Marguerite. You may come and tell me I am wrong whenever you please.
