Handwritten lettering in black ink on pale paper, forming an infinity symbol with the words Live the life you love, as a flash design for a lettering tattoo.

Live the life you love infinity lettering

Lettering · Black and grey · Flash

The image shows a handwritten design on paper, with the words Live the life you love arranged in the shape of an infinity symbol. The letters mix looped script with block capitals in black ink, with no shading or colour. The pale, slightly creased paper fills the frame, and the text runs around the loop from the left side to the right.

You find the paper behind the spice rack on the third night out of Cork, when the galley is pitching so hard the pan lids chatter like teeth. It has been folded and unfolded so many times it has gone soft as flannel. Across it, in two inks that don't quite match, someone has written a line that curls back on itself in a figure of eight: Live the life you love. The script runs one way, the capitals the other, and you can't tell where the loop begins.

Nobody on the crew will admit to writing it. Dougie, who has done the galley for twenty years, says it came aboard in a dead man's kitbag, which is the sort of thing Dougie says. You tape it up above the kettle, because it's the only thing on the bulkhead that isn't a fire drill notice or a warning about the deep fryer. Each time you turn to stir the stock you read it again, starting from the left and following the loop round until the words stop making sense and start to sound like weather.

By the time the Tyne comes into view, the paper has split along one fold. You lift it down, meaning to bin it with the potato peel, and find on the back a column of figures, a shopping list, and at the bottom, in a hand you recognise as your own, the word yes, underlined twice. You don't remember writing it. You stand in the steam with the paper in your fist for longer than the sauce will allow, then smooth it flat and pin it back up, face out, where the next cook will have to read it whether they like it or not.
