Birds flying from a dandelion on the top of a foot

Botanical · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A tattoo of several bird silhouettes drifts away from a dandelion seed head with a curved stem on the top of the foot. The birds are solid black shapes, while the seed head is drawn with fine dark lines and scattered dots that fade as they move away. The image is black ink only, set against a pale grey floor, and the foot fills most of the frame.

The swallows came back to the towpath the same week the barge Marjorie Pell went past with her new owner, a man called Teague who whistled at the horses and never looked at the water. He bought two pounds of loaves from me and asked whether the birds nesting under the bridge belonged to anyone. I said they belonged to the bridge. He seemed pleased with that, the way men are when they have been given a sensible answer.

Yesterday I counted seven swallows lifting off the reeds at once, and I thought of your mother's old hat with its pheasant feather, which you swore was alive for a summer. The seeds in the jar have started drifting as if the glass were open. I will send them on to you in the post if you want them, though I suspect the Royal Mail will break the jar and leave the seeds to find their own way north.
