Floral vine tattoo on the foot
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A bare foot is shown from the top, with a grey floral design running from near the ankle towards the toes. The design combines a central flower, curling scrolls, small leaves and dots drawn in thin, even black linework with light grey shading. The plain dark patterned background keeps the focus on the tattoo and the foot.

Dear Agnes, the rain has not let up since Tuesday, and Mr Pardoe's stall under the iron awning at Kirkgate is running like a gutter. I have kept the cloth dry by pinning it to the back board, which is more than I can say for my boots.

Yesterday a woman came to the stall wanting a length of black net trimmed with a vine, nothing bold, she said, only something to remind her of the garden behind her mother's cottage. She had the pattern on a scrap of brown paper, drawn in pencil, and she had gone over the scrolls so many times the lead had gone shiny. I thought of your sketches of the Hallam Road roses, all those small dots for the thorns.
I took the paper home and worked the vine at the kitchen table until the candle guttered. The trick, as Mrs Ainsley taught us, is to let each curl leave the stem as if it has changed its mind, and to set a single dot where a leaf would shed its water. Near midnight I had a flower no bigger than a thumbnail, its petals folded inward, with two scrolls curling away from it like a question nobody wanted to answer.
I have sent the net off by the carrier with a note saying the vine was finished. It was not, quite. I have enclosed a tracing of the second half, in case she writes back asking for the rest, so you will know where to find the missing curls if I am still standing in the rain when the post comes.
