Black and grey tattoo of a deer head with a dreamcatcher mandala between its antlers and feathers below, on the upper arm.

Deer head with dreamcatcher antlers on upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A large tattoo of a deer's head faces forward, with a dreamcatcher-style mandala and branching antlers above it and feathers with beaded strands hanging down either side. The face and fur are shaded with soft grey gradients, while the feathers and mandala use clean black outlines and fine linework. The photo shows three side-by-side views of the same arm, with the tattoo filling most of each frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The stag was waiting at the stop outside the closed bakery on Mill Row when your bus came round the corner at twenty past three, and it did not look surprised to see you. Its head was lowered under the weight of those branching antlers, and strung between the tines was a woven hoop of grey thread, fine as hair, with a star of knots at its centre that caught the sodium light and held it. You had driven this route for eleven years. You had never once been asked to stop for anything with antlers.

It climbed aboard slowly, the feathers hanging from its neck brushing the rail, the small glass beads on their strands clicking together like someone counting coins. Nobody woke. The night nurse in seat four kept her chin on her chest, and the lad with the headphones leaked a faint tinny song that stopped the moment the stag passed him. You took the long way round by the river, because it seemed rude not to. Where the road crossed the canal, the stag lifted its head, and the web between its horns swelled and gathered the loose threads of sleep from every seat, the way a net gathers wet leaves.

At the depot gate it stepped down without a sound. You watched it go up the towpath, a dark shape getting smaller under the lamps, until the mist took the antlers and then the rest. When you checked the bus at the end of the shift there was nothing on the seats but a single bead, warm as a fingertip, and a smell of cold woodsmoke. You kept it in your coat pocket for a long time afterwards, and you never once dreamed of anything you could remember.
