The snow had closed the road at Hob's Gate for nine days, and the innkeeper's wife, Maud Lattimer, was running low on candles before she ran low on guests. The old ash by the well had been split by lightning the summer her husband died, and its bark had healed in pale ridges, long and thin, like the lines a mason leaves when he tests a block. Maud would not let the woodsman fell it. Each morning she went out in the blue cold with a lantern and worked her ink over the scars, hatching the ridges into peonies, great heads of petals folding over one another, and cosmos flowers with small dark centres, until the tree looked as if it had been planted in a summer garden in the middle of winter.
On the ninth night the snow stopped and the carter's mule began to stamp. Piers went out to saddle it and found the ash in the lantern light, every scar gone under black blossom, the petals cut so finely that the frost sat on them without melting. He stood there until his fingers ached. When he came back in he said nothing about the tree. He only asked Maud how she made her ink.
She told him the secret was to leave a little white in every petal, so the light could get in. Then she poured him a cup of hot wine, and one by one the travellers pulled on their coats and went out into the new morning to look.
