Sunflower tattoo on a forearm
Botanical · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A sunflower with orange and yellow petals, a brown and green centre and green leaves sits on the inner forearm, with soft purple and grey shading around the edges. The linework is fine and the petals are shaded to suggest depth. The two photographs show the same arm from different angles against a striped top, with the flower placed just below the elbow.

Up on the hill above Carrow, where the curtain wall had fallen in the great frost, a sunflower grew out of the mortar of the gatehouse. Nobody had planted it. Old Hanne Coyle, who kept goats on the south slope, said it had come up the year her husband died, and that it had a face like a cartwheel and a temper like a hen.

The lord's steward wanted the stones cleared for a barn. He sent two lads with picks. They came back at dusk with blistered hands and said the flower had turned its head to watch them, and that its petals rattled like coins when the wind came off the moor. The steward laughed and went up himself the next morning with a bill hook.
Hanne found him sitting on the gatehouse step, the hook across his knees, the sunflower bent over him so its great brown face shaded his eyes. He told her he had cut one stalk and the cut had bled yellow sap that smelled of bread. He had not been able to lift the blade again. Hanne did not ask him what he had seen. She took a cheese from her apron and set it beside him, and together they waited for the sun to drop behind the broken keep.
Nobody cleared the gatehouse after that. The barn was built from the quarry at Scarth instead, and every harvest Hanne cut one head from the flower and dried its seeds on the windowsill, so the castle always kept a sunflower somewhere within its walls. The steward's son, when he grew old, said the flower only ever faced one way, toward whoever was owed a kindness.
