He had seen the sketch pinned by the door, the one with the wide eyes and the mouth gone round as a church bell, and he said it did not frighten him enough. I told him a face cannot be frightened any more than it already is. He paid me a shilling regardless.

Wednesday. I spent the whole afternoon on the lips. Pink lead, a touch of rose madder, and a bloom of white where the breath would catch. Ada, who sweeps the floor for the Hendersons' lot, stood behind me and said the mouth looked like it had just been told the price of bread. I laughed so hard I smudged the little dark tuft of beard, and had to paint it over twice because the sea wind kept lifting the canvas off its nails.

Thursday. The banner went up on the pier at dusk and the crowd gathered before the lamps were lit. Nobody spoke for a long moment. Then a boy pointed at the painted man and shrieked with delight, and the whole crowd shrieked with him, and Mr Gosse stood in the middle of the boards with his own mouth open in exactly the same way. I went home and could not sleep for thinking how one surprise, held still long enough, becomes a face people trust. I have hung the sketch above my bed where the lamplight reaches it, so that I wake each morning to a man who has just been told something extraordinary.
