Dear Nell, it's gone eleven and the rain has been striking the shop window since six, so I'm writing this at the bench with the lamp pulled down low. Mr Okafor finally let me take the loupe off its hook for the Pemberton job, the rose necklace that came in as a heap of seed pearls inside a biscuit tin. Forty-one beads, Nell. I counted twice, then once more on my fingers, because I didn't trust the tin.

The string had gone grey the way old silk does when it's kept in the dark. The clasp was a little rose in tarnished silver, its petals cut so finely you could still see the file marks. Whoever made it had wanted a garden in black and white, the roses stacked like cabbages in a cold frame and the pearls running between them like rain down a pane. I restrung it with waxed silk, a knot between every bead, the way Mr Okafor taught us, and with every knot I thought about the hand that had first pressed those petals into the metal.

When I finished it was past nine and the wrapping paper was all over the floor. One pearl I'd set was a little misshapen and warmer than the rest. I held it up to the lamp and saw a fleck of something dark inside, a grain of grit that had grown into the nacre over decades. I didn't have the heart to pull it out. I've pinned it to the corkboard above my bench, and tomorrow I'll tell Mr Pemberton his string is perfect, which it is, apart from the one bead that still remembers the dark.
