Black and grey realism sleeve with angel and pocket watch

Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A full sleeve tattoo shown from three angles, with an angel with outstretched wings beside a row of candles at the top, a bearded figure and a large pocket watch with Roman numerals in the middle, and a skull and an eye near the upper arm and wrist. The shading is smooth and detailed, with strong highlights and deep blacks that give the subjects a sculpted, photographic depth. Everything is rendered in black ink and greys against the skin, with the three panels arranged side by side.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Ada Pell kept the clocks at Gull Rock House because her husband had kept them before the sea took him, and nobody in Sandwick Bay had ever thought to ask her to stop. Every lodger who came up the steep steps brought a watch, and every watch was wound in the hall on Saturday night, and the keys went on the hook beside the candle box.

The winter the new lodger arrived, a tall man with a pocket watch the size of a saucer, the candles burned low on the landing for nine nights running. He would not say what he was waiting for. He sat at the window with the watch open on his knee and counted the lighthouse flashes under his breath, and when Ada asked whether the hour pleased him, he told her the sea had stopped the church clock in 1871 and he had come to start it again.

On the ninth night the wind dropped. Ada went up with the candle box and found the room empty, the bed made, and the watch lying face up on the sill with its hands together at midnight. Beside it someone had left a small brass cross and a single key, and the key fitted the church door.

She walked down through the wet lanes with the lantern. The clock in the tower had stood still for a century, and when she turned its key the hands began to move, slow and certain, and somewhere below in the bay a bell answered that nobody had rung.
