Black and grey rose and bud on upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A full rose in bloom sits at the centre, with a closed rosebud above it and a thorny stem curving down the arm. The petals and leaves are built up with soft grey shading and fine hatching, giving the flower depth and a three-dimensional look. The design is entirely black and grey and sits against a dark background, with a blue t-shirt sleeve visible at the right edge.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Tom, Mags says the rose painted on the side of the chandlery came out of the frost this morning with every petal furred white, and I stood there with the shop key in my hand thinking of the bush you planted behind the net loft the summer before the boat went out. It never flowered. You said it was too salty, and you were right about that, as you were about most things you got wrong.

The new harbourmaster has a closed bud sketched on the door of his van, pale and tight at the top, and he parks across the slipway every Tuesday. Nobody has the heart to tell him the lifeboat crew need it clear for drill. Mr Pell at the chandlery swears the rose on the wall grew out of an old thorn he dug from the cobbles. I told him that was rubbish. Then I went and looked at the thorns on that stem, curled like the hook of a gaff, and I could not honestly say he was wrong.

The boats came in last night with nothing aboard but the cold. Dad's oilskin is still on the peg by the back door. I haven't moved it. Your last postcard said the water off the Faroes goes the colour of slate and then of nothing at all, and I keep thinking about that whenever the wind swings north. Write when you can, even one line.

By the time this reaches you the frost will have lifted, and the rose may be in full bloom or it may not. Either way, it will still be there. Love, Jess. P.S. Mags says to tell you the bud has opened. I checked. It hasn't. She was being kind.
