Purple rose with tribal pattern on forearm
Blackwork · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A shaded purple rose sits at the centre of the design, with soft tonal gradients across the petals and small white highlights. Bold black tribal linework curves above, below and around the flower. The photograph is taken close up on the forearm against a plain skin tone and a blurred dark background.

The mule train has gone on without you, and the sky above the Passo di Vell is the colour of wet slate. You kneel in the scree beside the last cairn and pull your glove off with your teeth, because the only bloom still open this late in the year grows from a crack in the black rock below the saddle. Old Tomas at the inn said it would be dead before the first frost, and he said it the way men say things they have stopped expecting to see.

The rose is violet, darker at the rim where the petals curl and paler where the snow has breathed on them. Around its stem the wind has carved the rock into ridges that curl like thorns, black and sharp, the way the crags above the pass have always looked to the shepherds. Your grandmother used to tell you that whoever takes a flower from the Crown Walls must leave something on the cairn in return. You have nothing but a brass button from your coat and a stub of pencil, so you cut the stem with the knife your father gave you and lay the button on the stones.
When you lift the cairn's topmost slab to set the button in its hollow, there is a tin underneath, rusted at the seams. Inside are a dozen flowers pressed flat, each one tagged with a year in faded ink. The earliest is dated the year your grandmother was born. The newest is hers, from the winter she did not come back down. You have always been told she walked the pass for a reason, and now you know the reason was the same as yours.
You press the rose between the pages, tuck the tin back under the stones, and start down into the dusk. The blade is in your hand, the button is on the cairn, and you carry one petal in your pocket, purple going brown in the dark.
