A small black script tattoo reading Exhale, with a comma, sits on the back of the wrist of a hand resting on a bare thigh. The lettering is thin and even, shown in black ink with no colour. The composition is taken from above, with white platform trainers, a gold chain anklet and a tan suede surface in the frame.

Her name was Ivy Penrose, and she was the quickest key-hand the company had. Nobody ever saw her send a full stop. Her messages ran on with commas, one clause hanging off the next, and the supervisors grumbled that it wasted tape. She only said a full stop was a door shut in somebody's face, and a comma was a door left on the latch.

Ivy read them twice, then sat so still at her key that the boy on the next desk thought the line had gone dead. When she finally tapped her reply, it was two words and a comma, and the boy only understood it when the morning shift found the sheet and read it aloud to himself: Exhale,

He asked her years later what she meant by it. She said it was the only instruction she had ever been sure of. The comma, she said, is the bit where you stop holding on and wait for the next breath to come by itself, because it always does, if you let it.
