Black and grey rose with vine on a foot

Realism · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A large rose with layered petals sits on the top of a foot, with a thin curling vine running up towards the ankle and a few small leaves. The rose is shaded with smooth gradients and sharp highlights, giving it a dimensional, realistic look. The image is in black and grey tones against a blurred, dark background, with the foot filling most of the frame.

You have been on the bench at Thornley Road since the four-ten was cancelled, watching the last of the light go grey over the sidings. Across the footbridge, Mrs Adeyemi is pulling her florist's shutter down, but she leaves one bucket out for the late commuters, and in it a single cut rose is going soft at the edges. You remember the drawing she showed you last spring, a rose she had sketched in pencil for her brother, the petals built up in layers like folded paper and a thin stem curling off the page as if it wanted to leave.

"Nobody buys them after six," she says, coming down the steps with her coat already on. She hands it to you without asking. The stem is cold and wet, and she has snipped the thorns so they won't catch on anything. She tells you the trick her grandmother taught her: shade the dark side of every petal first, then lift the highlights with a kneaded rubber, so the flower seems to turn towards a lamp that isn't there.

The departure board flickers and a replacement service is announced in a voice that sounds tired of itself. You stand, and the rose stays in your hand. Under the slats of the bench, someone has scratched a little loop with a key, the same curl the vine makes as it climbs towards the sky. You step onto the train with the rose still in your fingers.

Somewhere past the tunnel, you open your palm and find the petals have dried into the exact shape of her drawing, every layer still in place, the stem bent just where the pencil bent it.
