Sunflower tattoo on the back of the neck

Botanical · Neck · Black and grey · Photo

A small sunflower with outlined petals and a stippled, dotted centre sits in the middle of the back of a neck. The linework is solid black with fine inner detail on the petals, and the shading is minimal, relying on the open skin tone for light. The flower fills the centre of the frame against a plain, softly lit background of skin and hair.

Dear Ada,

The fair came into Holmfirth on Monday with its generators coughing, and by Wednesday the Sunflower was the only thing anyone wanted to talk about. That's the little tent-ride at the back of the field, the one with the canopy Sol Vickery painted before either of us was born. Mr Halloran says the black outlines are older than the paint underneath them, so every repaint has been a matter of tracing the old lines and hoping for the best.

I've been up the stepladder all week with a tin of enamel and a brush I bought off a sign-writer in Barnsley. Each petal is a shape you could fit a thumbnail inside, and the centre is nothing but dots, hundreds of them, pressed on one at a time with the wet end of the brush. Sol must have had the patience of a saint. I counted them on Thursday with the rain dripping off my collar and got to two hundred and eleven before I lost my place.

On Friday I found his pencil under the lip of the canopy, wrapped in a bit of oilcloth, and beside the centre he'd scratched a tally: two hundred and twelve. So either I'm hopeless at counting or he left one out on purpose. I've decided to leave it. The last dot's gap sits right at the heart of the flower, small as a full stop, and when the lights come on tonight it'll be the one spot nobody can see.

Love, Nell
