Roses and compass on an upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A woman with long blonde hair, shown from the side, has a sleeve-style tattoo across her upper arm. The design includes several shaded roses, a compass with a detailed dial, a pocket watch and a ribbon banner with partly visible lettering. The shading is soft and smooth, with the greys and highlights giving the roses and metal objects depth against plain grey walls and a khaki top.

Dear Wren, the rain on Halden Ridge has finally stopped, so I can write without the pages curling. Your brother's pocket watch came back from the menders yesterday with its glass cracked clean across. The man at the counter said he had seen worse on a dredge boat. I told him it had been Grandfather's, which is true, and that the hands had stopped at twenty to five, which is also true, though I have never learned why that hour should matter.

The compass is what I really want to tell you about. Mother kept it in the drawer with the faded ribbon, the one printed with a survey year of which only the last two digits survive. Yesterday I opened it on the kitchen table and the needle shivered, swung, and settled north-north-east, which is wrong for this valley. The surveyors blame magnetic drift. Grandfather always said the needle knew where the old roses were buried, and I thought he was simply being Grandfather.

So I took the chart and the compass up the boundary wall and followed the bearing until it led me to the hollow beneath the three ash trees. There was a stone there with a rose cut into its top, worn to a smudge by weather, and under it a tin box. Inside were letters tied with the same ribbon, the stopped watch and a note in his square hand: keep the needle turning and it will bring you home.

I have set the needle to true north and put the watch back in its box. Come home soon, and bring your good boots. The wall still needs walking, and I would rather not walk it alone.
