Black and grey shaded rose tattoo with outlined leaves and buds across a person's hip and upper thigh, in Traditional style.

Black and grey roses on hip and thigh

Traditional · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A cluster of three shaded roses with outlined petals and leaves wraps from the hip down the upper thigh. The linework is bold and dark, with soft grey shading creating depth in the petals. The tattoo fills most of the frame against smooth skin, with blue bikini fabric and two hands visible at the edges.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The enamel is still tacky when the first boat clears the breakwater, so you keep your thumb off the wheelhouse and watch her come in low under the gulls. Your uncle Tom taught you to draw roses the way he taught you to mend a net: outline first, then the petals filled from the centre outwards, dark where they curl under and pale where the light catches. He said a rose only looks like it's opening if you cheat the shadows. You have been cheating them all week, one grey wash at a time, while the harbour waited for news from the grounds.

There are three roses because there were three brothers on the fleet, and because your grandmother said three was the number that held a thing together. The first stem is finished, the second is half-shaded, and the third is only an outline with a closed bud at its tip, its petals still unfilled. Nobody asked you to leave it that way. You left it because the Mary Ellen has not come in yet, and you do not know how to paint a flower that might be open or might be shut.

The sea goes flat and silver by four. Women gather at the slipway with flasks and nobody speaks much. Then the Mary Ellen's engine note rises over the chop, someone shouts, and the whole quay turns like one bent stalk towards the light.

You dip the brush, load it with the thinnest grey you have, and lay the first petal of the last rose, soft as breath on glass.
