Black and grey sleeve beside leather harness
Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A black and white photograph of a bare torso wearing a studded black leather harness and several layers of beaded necklaces that hang over the head, so no face is visible. A dense ornamental tattoo with swirling tendrils and fine patterned detail covers the arm on the right of the frame, from the upper arm down to the forearm. The dark studio backdrop and soft side lighting keep the focus on the harness and the shaded linework of the sleeve.

At ten past two the lorry from Ghent sat under the sodium lights of Bay Four, its trailer doors open like a mouth, and you were the one holding the clipboard because Hallett had gone to ring his wife. The driver said the load was leather harness straps and bead stock for a costume house in Brighton. The manifest agreed with him, line for line, and that was the first thing that made you uneasy.

You pulled the first crate. Straps, stiff and smelling of tannin, each buckled and studded with brass cones. Beneath them lay a long box of necklaces, strands of black glass beads hung on wire loops so they wouldn't tangle. You counted the layers the way your grandmother counted stitches: nine strands, then eleven, then a dozen. Tucked into the lid was a sheet of tracing paper, and on it someone had drawn a sleeve of vines, tendrils that doubled back on themselves and sprouted small spirals, the kind of patient linework that takes weeks.
In the bottom margin, in soft pencil, was a note: "For Mireille, when the lines have grown back in. Keep it dark. Keep the beads in order." No name on the manifest matched Mireille. You turned the paper over and found the same vine again, half finished, its last tendril running off the edge of the sheet as if it had somewhere else to be.
Hallett came back, looked at the crate, looked at you, and said, just stamp it, love, it's a costume. You stamped it. Then, while he was signing the driver's sheet, you folded the tracing paper into your breast pocket and kept the one loose bead that had rolled into the seam of your glove, cool and round, all the way home.
